It never existed, you know
The America you would have us take back

Homophobia buried them in closets
Sexism kept them working in the home
Racism kept them to their communities
and denied us all their light

We hit them and they stayed silent
We glowered and we raged
For did we not want to see

Did you think we could hoard all the power for ourselves forever
The irresistible advance of progress
The inevitable backsliding
When we are afraid of a black man in a suit

I haven't crunched all the numbers, but angry white men
and people who insist all children MUST BE BORN,
but then stop caring about them
Doesn't sound like a winning coalition
America is getting more colorful
Even brighter than your ruddy cheeks

Stranger danger
Spousal abuse
Drugs and alcohol
Nothing new under th' sun

There is only so much income inequality a society can bear....
Unfortunately, we don't know the exact amount...
Til after the revolution

Perhaps the inheritors of this society , Will be merciful
Or perhaps heads will roll
This phantom you chase, it's all in your.....oops, there it goes

Political poetry is hard to pull off, but you did an excellent job with this. It is also risky - will the politics cost you votes? This was a fascinating take on MacGuffin.

How is a poem like a gun?

Thought-provoking!

I love the overriding idea that we cannot go back to the glory days, mostly because they weren't all that glorious to begin with, and that the phantom will never be caught.

Love your last three lines here!

I don't think that anyone who spouts off about the "good old days" actually believes that the world was better, rather that anything "untoward" was kept out of sight and out of mind. They'd prefer us to stay in the closet where they don't have to think about us, or segregated from them in communities where we don't "mix" and they don't have to address us at all...

Nicely done.

Unfortunately, we don't know the exact amount...
Til after the revolution

A mistake made by many civilizations before us, and one we're closer to all the times.

This was terrific and powerful, and the idea of 'that America' (that phantom America that was never the noble perfection such angry people claim we've lost) as the MacGuffin works really well here. It is all-consuming motivation for some, and so tangible to them that they do not realize it failed to meet the more powerful ideal America in many, many ways.

Nicely done! *high five* for political-writing solidarity this week! :D This is really good. I like the lines about America becoming more colorful than their ruddy cheeks.

Very thought-provoking, and absolutely relevant. "America" has always been a MacGuffin, I think, so if that was the aim - you nailed it. I enjoyed this.

there is SO MUCH truth here

This idyllic America is such BS there has always been inequality and inconsistency to drive us all to madness

This short piece captures a lot of feelings, well done!

This piece is really powerful and thought-provoking. And hits on so many points I wish so many people would understand but refuse to see. The opening lines are really, really great. My favorite part because of the multitude of truth in them.
